" Jim’s mother died peacefully at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2005. She was surrounded by the Admiral, Anna, Andy, and my son, Dylan.
A few days before she died, I sat with Clara at her hospital bedside. I pretended she was conscious and held a conversation with her. I told her silly old jokes that she used to laugh at, such as:
“What did the Englishman say to the three-headed man?”
Clara always got the punch line before one could complete the joke and, right on queue, she would say,
“Hello, hello, hello.”
Andy flew in from Hawaii the day before his Mother died. He kissed her on the forehead and whispered, “I’m here now, Mom.” He had brought in a beautiful bouquet of hypnotic fragranced Island flora. The nurse placed them in a vase next to Clara’s bed. After awhile, Andy reached up and plucked one of the fragrant blossoms. He placed it front of his Mother’s nose in a seemingly futile effort to get her to smell the beautiful flower. Clara murmured, as she apparently was aware of the scent, and actually reached up to try to grasp it gently with her lips before falling back into a comatose state.
I’ve known Andy Morrison for nigh on forty years -- ever since he was a teenaged boy living in London with his parents. We have been through thick and thin together, in good times and bad times.
I thought I’d observed all sides to him, but I have never seen Andy express such tender and loving affection to any living soul on this planet in all those years.
So, the Matriarch has passed, leaving us all here while she goes off in search of her son,
I bet,........... if I know her.
Her ashes will be scatterd over the pacific ocean off the coast off San Diego
Rest in peace, Clara Clarke Morrison.
