The Doors Unreleased Original Studio Recordings. A fantastic find, this set of nine eight-track reel-to-reel tapes features six hours of studio recordings by the influential band. Contents includes five different takes of "When the Music's Over", featuring different lyrics as well as Jim Morrison on harmonica; several great takes of "Queen of the Highway" that reveal the band's creative processes at work as the music and lyrics evolve over radically different approaches to the song; hair-raising performances by Morrison on "Not to Touch the Earth"; unreleased tracks "I Will Never Be Untrue" and "Motor Cooled Down"; plenty of studio banter; and more. Also included is a reel featuring an interview with an unspecified person, and a blank reel.
These are original master tapes -- not safety copies -- with studio-quality sound, and no other copies exist except for nine CDs of digital transfers that go to the winning bidder.

Here's what's going on.

First, as you are all-too painfully aware, our "Year Of The Doors" has been blown to smithereens by several outside forces. The record industry has imploded, seemingly beneath our feet. As I've stated before, most physical CDs in the States are sold at "Big Box" retail stores like Best Buy, WalMart, etc., and they don't CARRY catalogue releases as a whole. So, that's been a drag. Secondly, we've put out quite a bit of product over the last 7 or 8 years, and both labels and retailers are a little inundated with Doors stuff, so we've been getting a lot of resistance from both sides. It's been an uphill fight.

The result:

1. I'm STILL fighting for a physical release of the complete outtakes from L.A.Woman. The label, to date, is not willing to do this, but I haven't given up. Will I win this one? God, I hope so, but so far? No. Stand by, though;
2. I think the complete Matrix Masters can/will be released. Again, that's been a fight, but I think we can see this through, even if it's through an outside licensee like Mobile Fidelity, Audio Fidelity, Analogue Productions or the like. I'd still like to see gold CDs remastered by Steve Hoffman. He's just completing Janis Joplin's "Cheap Thrills" for me now, and we will continue to push for this;
3. We are still trying to work out another live release - whether that's Hawaii, Vancouver or the like, there are some missing parts, and we have to decide if and how to address. The last word ain't been writ on this by The Doors themselves yet, so anything can happen. If/when I have news on this front, I will let you know;

HOWEVER, we do have some cool things in store.

As you have seen, the brand new Hollywood Bowl is coming. The soundtrack is coming on CD and digital as well. THAT was a fight in and of itself, believe me. I have also seen the back 'n forth on how the fixes were done, the flying in outside pieces, etc. These were decisions made by The Doors themselves, along with Bruce Botnick. They made creative decisions - some will agree, some won't, but we can't please ll the folks all the time, THIS we know. In the end, the guys opted to please themselves and create what THEY felt was the best presentation. It's not perfect. But in the end, it's what they opted for. And they (and I) feel that it works well, it's the best presentation of the concert, and, hell - it's a miracle that Botnick was able to wrangle a complete show out of what we had to work with. Watching the show now, it brings back the magic of that night, the cohesion of a complete Doors show, and the absolute best technological restoration of the film. Also, I think you're really gonna like the extras. We spent a lot of time, money and care on producing three long documentary-style short films to go along with the concert, and I think you'll be really happy. I think they're, like 90 minutes in length all together (don't quote me on this), and feature extensive interviews - with the guys, with Lisciandro, with the Chambers Brothers, Botnick, and more, including a really cool history of the Bowl itself. I didn't know that Dick Dale was the first rock performer to ever take the stage at the Bowl....

You WILL see The London Fog released. This has been a struggle as well, but we've come up with what I think is some of the coolest packaging I've ever seen. Our idea was to build a really amazing "collector's box" with music, photos, souvenirs, etc. I can't say much right now, but trust me, I had you guys in mind when we designed this. It is really something. Look for it in the first half of 2013. But, again, ya know......don't quote me on absolute date. Just know you WILL have it.

Jac Holzman, The Doors and I have been working exhaustively for the last year and a half on what we hope is THE absolute, ultimate Doors digital collectible - a complete, super in-depth App and e-Book (they go together at this point) that will, we hope, blow hardcore fans away. Among other features, to go along with all the digital tricks and doodads, Jac has gathered pieces, writings, opinions and submissions from Patti Smith, many journalists/essayists and a whole host of additional unexpecteds. Expect it to be a really deep, immersive experience. This has been a labor of love by Jac himself, and it's his deepest, most loving and authoritative take on the band that changed his life and world history. You can feel his guidance, care, passion and love in every single byte. Look for this in Q1 of 2013.

Other things we're working on? Another DVD concert - and nothing's off the table, whether it's Europe, Stockholm, Isle Of Wight, etc. It's a labyrinthian maze of issues, but we're working our way through them. A complete reorganization of The Doors' iTunes store. A whole separate, new plan for Europe, South America, Australia and Asia. Some collectible physical stuff. Etc, etc.

You will also see vinyl and SACDs of all Doors studio albums from Analogue Productions. These will be the very best, uber-high quality audiophile-grade products that it is possible to create. Analogue Productions has spent an absolute fortune - not only in painstakingly pure remastering and in ultra-careful vinyl pressing and SACD preparation - but they have printed a stunningly beautiful booklet to go with the vinyl. It's obvious how much love went into it, and they hired Ben Fong-Torres to write extensive new essays on each studio album as well.

As things coalesce and gel, I will be back here from time-to-time to update you. We have to convert to a digital and streaming world, but we're not gonna let the physical, catalogue and hardcore world go. EVER, as long as I'm around.I'll do my best, I promise, but I do not make ANY decisions in a vacuum, and there are many outside partners, vendors, rightsholders and others that have a voice (and even a roadblock) - not to mention the guys themselves. They approve everything, and we follow their vision completely. I'm the manager, but it is THEIR band, their art, their friend Jim, and their legacy.
